Lost Address Book Categories after Sync

J

Joel McIntosh

This is odd. I was syncing my contacts and calendar events to my .Mac
account and my iPhone (I know ... two different processes, but I'm not sure
when this problem happened because I didn't have Entourage open at the
time). Entourage has Sync Services turned on for contacts and calendars.

After the sync when I opened up Entourage and checked my Entourage address
book, all of my contacts had lost their categories.

I can't swear that the sync was the cause, but I can't think of any other
action I have taken that might have impacted my Entourage address book.

I verified and compacted the Entourage database, reapplied the categories
manually, and tested syncing again. All went well and the categories were
fine.

Anyone know what might have happened and how to avoid it in the future?

I agree that it sounds like it happened with Sync Services. I haven¹t seen
this reported before. Usually it¹s losing ALL of your contacts that happens.

I¹m not sure if there is anything you can do other than keep good backups.
Sync Services still has some glitches.

Seems Corentin has a script to replace categories that get lost during a
rebuild. I¹ll cc him on this.

I had a related problem. My Treo was replaced. When I tried to sync
the new one (via Missing Sync) it restored a backup which apparently
showed all of my categories as part of the "notes" section of each
entry, but did not restore the categories to the new Treo. This is a
royal pain as I have >1000 contacts.

Does anybody no how to apply a category to multiple contacts in
Entourage?

While I'm at it, I also need to delete multiple calendar entries that
don't have categories. Apparently, in the course of restoring the db
a couple of times in the past when I had Treo issues, each time it
restored holidays and simply duplicated them. I'm guessing that this
was because the original holidays had lost their category
("holiday"). In any event, I'm now faced with deleting multiple
entries 1 at a time going out for years. The only way I can find to
delete multiple entries in Entourage is by deleting by category. I'd
appreciate any help I can get. While I'm pretty comfortable using
Entourage, I'm not by any means a MAC (or any other type of) expert
(in fact, this is the 1st time I've ever posted anything and am not
yet sure how to come back to check for a response.).

Thanks to all
