Lost Autotext Entries

P

Pete_Kilbourne

I have entered several entries as autotext in a document
hoping to use it again as boiler plate. Now I can't find
them. Can anyone please suggest where I might look.

The document I was working in was called Specifications.
I thought the entries might be attached to that specific
document, so I searched all documents on my only hard
drive with the same Spec and looked in each Autotext
entries. No sign.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Pete,

I'm not sure what you're trying to do but maybe this will help. Autotext is
not document specific. If you go to Tools menu> AutoCorrect and click on
the Autotext tab, you will be able to add or delete autotext entries. To
activate an autotext entry while you're typing in a document, you have to
type the first three or four (I forget which) letters of the word or name
before the autotext tool activates.

Hope this helps.

AutoText entries are saved only in templates, not documents, but it is
possible for them not to be saved, apparently.

Quoting the MVP article here:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/AutoText.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

"Where are AutoText entries saved?
AutoText entries are saved in Word templates (*.dot files); they cannot be
saved in regular documents (*.doc files). If you don¹t specify a different
location when creating an entry, it will be saved in the default global
template, Normal.dot.
Because AutoText entries are stored in templates, additions and changes to
them aren't automatically saved when you save the document you're working
on. To make sure they are saved, hold the Shift key while you click the File
menu, and select the Save All command to save both the document and the
template. If you forget this step, you should be given a chance to save the
template when you close Word‹but you shouldn't rely on this.
You can copy AutoText entries between templates with the Organizer
(Tools>Templates and Add-Ins>Organizer>AutoText)."

If Word crashed rather than quitting normally, changes made to templates
would have been lost. If yours did get saved, they should be in the Normal
template, by default. Look for them in the Organizer (not sure if under
Tools | Macros or Tools | Templates and Add-ins, depends on version), under
the AutoText tab.

If necessary, recreating them should be a little easier, as you should be
able to copy the existing text....
