Lost CD for Office 2002 but is on my hard drive ?

Sadly, many key documents and excel sheets are not accessible to me, and I am
frustrated with the lack of support from both Dell and Microsoft. I lost my
OEM CD for Microsoft Office Pro 2002, and I knowi t is on my hard drive,
evidenced in the Control Panel Software (385MB), however, clicking on any
Desktop Icon or going into the MSO.HELP EXE or MS Office 10/1033 is of no
use, as I am prompted for the " Installing the Disk " with the key words "
proret.msi and " installation package.msi." in the menu boxes. Dell installed
the software when I purchased my laptop, and has no copies available, and I
am not anxious to purchase another copy. Is there any way to circumvent the
CD Disk Prompt, knowing it is in my system or hard drive ? Thank you,

Respectfully,
Gregory Warren

No, you need the entire installation cd, either copied to your hard drive, or
the cd itself. Just because Office was installed on your machine won't help
you if you need to install again or repair an installation as the original
installation source files are needed. I will usually copy the entire CD to
my hard drive to make installation easier and so that I don't have to find
the CD later if I need it again.

Because you have an OEM copy, you would have to go back to Dell for a
replacement disk and that would be an exercise in futility.

You could try contacting a friend who has the *exact* same software (version
and edition) and use their disks to get you past this issue. Be aware that
if it's not the same, it'll know the difference and you won't be any further
ahead than you are now.

If that doesn't work, you're going to have to lay out some cash.

JoAnn,

Thank you kindly for the timely response and intelligent answer. Your answer
was similar to another tech expert's response, and that is pretty much " I am
going to have to spend cash ", as I have already searched for similar disks.
Thank you for your answer, and saving me much time, and futility, in trying
to solve an intractable issue. It is greatly appreciated, and I wish you a
Happy New Year !

I truly wish I could have given you a different answer. Finding out we have
to get out the plastic is *never* a happy thing.

If/when you do decide to break down and buy it again, visit amazon.com
first. Their prices are usually a few bucks cheaper than other places and
you'll have the disks in hand for a later reinstall.

Have a safe and happy New Year!

If you locate winword.exe and double click does it run, or give the same
error?
If it gives the same error, then other than trying an earlier restore point,
assuming you are using winxp, then unfortunately you need a cd to repair
Office
PS MS does not support OEM software and the OEM only retains copies for a
certain length of time. The size as shown in Add/Remove cannot be relied
upon. Retaining the origonal cd's & making copies of these is essential.
