Lost contacts when altering catagory

In Outlook 2002 contacts I noticed that one of my personally added
catagories was mis-spelled. I added a new catagory with the correct
spelling by changing the spelling of the catagory name in the contact
form. The new catagory and the mis-spelled catagory were now and the
the same contacts (less the one I changed) were seen in both.

I then deleted the mis-spelled catagory and ALL the contacts previously
seen in both catagories were deleted and there was no undo available.

Is this normal operation?

In future where contacts have multiple catagories how should I delete a
catagory without risking losing any contacts?

Above should have read "The new catagory and the mis-spelled catagory
were now seen"...

Yes, this is perfectly normal. You didn't delete the category. You deleted all the contacts that were marked with that category. What you should have done was selected all those contacts (use the By Category view), right-clicked, then chosen Categories. From the Categories dialog, you could have deselected the old category and selected the new one.
