lost data source to Word 2007 chart

I created a chart in Word 2007, which when opening and double clicking on the
chart automatically opened an excel spreadsheet where the data is input. For
some reason, the excel data source no longers opens. The Data section under
Chart Tool: Layout; is now grayed out and cannot be selected. How do I
locate the Excel Data Source?
