Lost

When I opened Word it gave me options to saving documents
which I had already saved before closing my previous
session. I don't know what happened but one particular
document that I had already worked on for some days and
had been repeatedly updated disappeared. It's not in the
bin either, where has it gone??

Is it possible you already had the document open, modified it, and
then tried to open it again? What did the message say exactly? Did it
ask if you wanted to revert to the previously saved version of the
document? What version of Word are you using?

Lost

I have Word 2002. The problem occurred after saving and
using Alt+F4 for closing all my applications. When I
restarted Word the next session the Document Recovery task
pane offered two versions of the document. I clicked on
the most recent. I did not annotate in detail the behavior
of the computer since the recovery pane never lost my
stuff before so I only have a vague memory of the error
message saying something about not being able to eliminate
the document. Anyhow it didn't open and I couldn't find it
where it was last saved. I started working on a new blank
document which I realized after sometime Word had
automatically named with the name of the file that was
lost. I tried to undo all that I had typed in this new
document to see if Word had opened the file I was looking
for and perhaps cancelled the original text. I thought I
could maybe regain it by undoing the undesired canceling
but there was nothing there.
I tried the tricks in the Kb: "HOW TO: Recover a Lost File
in Word 2002" http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;Q316951 but had no luck

I suspect the 'blank' document you were working on was a recovered
version of the file since Word won't automatically save a new document
for you.

Now, if you are certain you did create a new document then you could
have a third-party add-in that may have saved the document. In either
case, sadly, the original document is lost and this wouldn't be the
type of situation you could implement document recovery procedures.

If you have a backup or have under Tools/Options/Save/Always create
backup copy enabled then you may be able to recover the content from
another document.
