lost emails

I had a number of files for my emails, I thought were backed up either on my
local pc or our server. I was able to click on one of the folders and read
all the contents up to just recently.
I was given a new pc and IT support thought everything was brought over to
my new computer. Guess again. I went into one of folders and found all email
stored from 2/07 to the date I got the new computer GONE. I still have those
from before that date and those after I got the new computer, but everything
else is gone.
But, I'm confused. Going back to before the new pc, how could I read all my
email in one folder, email that apparently was backed up in two different
places, but yet appeared to be in one folder??? Does Outlook display all the
contents of a folder even if it may be stored in different locations?

What kind of "Folder" are you referring to? A .PST file? A folder within a
..PST file? How did IT bring your data over?

They were folders located under my INBOX on Outlook main screen. I would
move my various emial into those folders. I had a folder for a project that
was started after 1/30/07. I would drag related emails into it. That whole
folder is gone.

OK, and are you connecting to an Exchange server or is your data stored in a
..PST file locally? You also didn't tell me how your IT people transferred
your data and put it into Outlook...if you don't know, see if you can find
out.

First answer is no, not connected to an exchange server. Though I thought I
was saving to our Windows server, ???
File transfer wizard to the next question.

Search your hard drive for any files with a .PST extension. You will
probably have to enable searching within hidden folders to find your .PST
files. When you find them, go into Outlook, click File | Open | Outlook Data
File, browse to the file you think is the one, and click Open. See if your
data is there.

Exchange Server is a collaboration tool for corporations to use an internal
mail system and share other Outlook information easily. Windows server is an
entirely different server system, used for file sharing, printer sharing,
backups, etc.
