lost envelope notification on right side of taskbar

Win XP Pro, SP3. Outlook 2003, SP2

I used to get a little envelope when Outlook was minimized
and new mail was received. I got the envelope on the right
side of the taskbar.

Although the envelope is still checked in the Outlook
options, it doesn't show.

When I go to the taskbar properties, customize, I see the
little envelope and it says you have new mail. BUT - it is
under past items rather than current items. I have outlook
itself set to always hide, but I've tried it different ways
and I still can't seem to get the envelope.

Is there a way to move it from past items to current items
and would that do it?

BTW, I can get the transparent notification, but I want the
little envelope that will stay there until you actually read
the mail or close Outlook.

Help?

TIA

Louise

The one thing you didn't mention is if you set the envelope to 'Show' in the
notification area properties.

Change the behavior field to "Always show" or simply disable customized
notifications.
