Lost "File" menu in Word 97

Bill Rule

I've lost the "File" menu item from my copy of Word from Office 97.
I've reinstalled Word (after deleting it first) but to no avail.
Might this be the result of a virus/worm?
Also, perhaps unconnected, various icons have begun to adopt the graphics of other programmes as their own, with no adverse effects to date. Even the Windows Media-Player icon in the Taskbar is masquerading as the Schedule Agent at the moment. Last week, it was the "Fresh Download" tool.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Bill,

See the article "My menus and toolbars are missing and won't come back

Or: Some of the options on Word's built-in dialogs are permanently
greyed out, when they shouldn't be;

Or: Word doesn't retain my settings (or my recently-used files list)
when I quit and go back in.

Or: Some of the tabs in Tools | Options look wonky (they're either blank
or the text is shifted down and to the right)

Or: Word opens very slowly." at:

Many users have reported losing the File menu from their menu bar. Try these
fixes (in order):

1. Open Tools | Customize. On the Toolbars tab, select Menu Bar and press
Reset.

2. If that doesn't work, switch to the Commands tab and select Built-in
Menus in the Categories list. In the Commands list, select File and drag it
to the menu bar.

3. If that doesn't work (or the problem recurs on restarting Word), see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm

FWIW, deleting and reinstalling rarely solves problems such as this.
