Lost hard returns somehow

In Excel 97, I had a worksheet that contained a merged
group of cells with lines of text separated by a hard
return. They looked like

Ace sponsors:
Golfers:
Par sponsors:
Donations:

and so on.

I recently upgraded to Excel 2000 and didn't notice any
changes or loss of formatting on this sheet until this
morning. In the above-mentioned cell, I can enter
additional info (with the hard return ALT+Enter), and it
appears to be formatted properly until I tab or otherwise
leave the cell. Then, all my careful entries are replaced
with
#########################################################

straight across the length of the cell.

I printed out one of these sheets and noticed that, where
I had put certain words in bold print, the #####s were
also in bold. But other than that, all the formatting
disappeared. Apparently Excel is telling me that my cell
isn't properly sized for the data entered, which is what
the hard returns were supposed to be doing. "Wrap text"
is also on in this cell, but I get nothing but the line of
number symbols when I try to view or print the sheet.

There are no formulas in use, just simple text formatting.

Can anyone possibly tell me what went wrong and how to fix
it?

Thanks.

Try changing the cells' format to "General".
