lost hyperlinks

i have a spreadsheet with several hyperlinks to server directories. we just
upgraded to office 2007. since the upgrade, my hyperlinks won't stay active.
if i click on the cell with the hyperlink i get the error "the address of
this site is not valid..." if i click on the address bar, then click on the
same cell, the hyperlink becomes active, but it doesn't stay active if i
close and re-open the spreadsheet. i've tried adding '<...>' arrows at the
beginning and end of the hyperlink, but after i save and come back into the
spreadsheet, the hyperlinked cells are inactive again.
