Lost INSERT--> PAGE BREAK button/menu option

In an earlier version of Word, I had set up a macro to insert a page break, something I do quite often. It did not transfer, so I tried to make a keyboard shortcut.

I now have no option to insert a page break. It no longer appears in the Insert-->Break menu.

Where did it go? How can I get it back?

Someone will probably guide you re the menu route in Word 2008 (which I
don't use) -- but Shift-Enter is the default keyboard shortcut that inserts
a page break; similarly Command-Enter for a section break.

Just a couple of additional points to Clive's reply - If you're using a
laptop (or something other than a full-size keyboard) you'll need to add the
[fn] key to the strokes he mentioned, & on some keyboards the [enter] key
(Numeric Keypad) is labeled as [return] rather than [enter]:)

As far as fixing your menu: go to View> Customize Toolbars & Menus -
Toolbars & Menus page, click the name of the Menu Bar then click the Reset
button & confirm OK when prompted. If that doesn't do it, go back to the
Customize dialog - Commands page, select All Commands from the Categories
list then locate the InsertPageBreak command in the Commands list. In one
step drag the command to the Menu Toolbar's Insert pad, down to Break then
over to the submenu & drop it in the appropriate position.

I'm curious as to why you would ever have needed a macro to insert a page
break. There's been a built-in keystroke for that purpose since Hector was a
pup, not to mention the infrequent need to create manual page breaks in lieu
of more stable & more preferable techniques for controlling text flow.

Clive: thanks, but unfortunately when I attempted to replace that with the command+enter I've been using for the past 10 years across two or three word processors, I lost the shift+enter option, the command+enter substitution, and the menu item on the Insert--> break menu. Opting to reset the shortcuts has not helped, either.

Bob:

Your suggestion on reseting the menu bar worked in that the option is now displayed on the INSERT--> Break menu.

NEW WRINKLE: it doesn't work when I click on it. Any idea why a command might not work?

(To answer your other questions: I've been using Command+Enter to make page breaks for two or three word processors now over the past 15 years. It's automatic for me, and whenever I upgrade, I always make the macro. As for why I use page breaks: I type responses to my students papers as one file and separate each page with a page break because it's very simple and very easy. I'm not laying out books or anything fancy--or at least I thought it wasn't fancy until this problem emerged.)

Shift + Enter and Command + Enter are both mapped to Insert Page Break in
Word 2008.

As Bob notes, you can re-map any other key sequence you want to use to do
the same thing.

In Notebook Layout View, page breaks are disabled.

Students frequently work in Notebook Layout View. If the file was saved in
Notebook Layout View, that's how it will open.

Like Bob, I can't understand why you need a macro for this: it's a default
keystoke in Word, and always has been. You can customise it to be any
keystroke you like.

Cheers
