Lost Microsoft licence on faulty laptop...

I recently purchased a Toshiba Laptop from Dick Smith. At the same time I
purchaed Microsoft Office Home and Student Version and Outlook.

I loaded the purchased Microsoft software on to the laptop, only to find out
a day later that the machine was faulty. Dick Smith gave me a new laptop,
formatted the old one (I assume) and sent it back to Toshiba etc.

I only get three software licences with the purchased Microsoft software.
Can I get a new licence for the one I lost on the faulty machine. Dick Smith
told me to speak to Toshiba. Toshiba say it's not their problem and can't
help with the licence. They told me to speak to Microsoft.

Microsoft can you help? I have all relevant paperwork and receipts.

You are labouring under a common misconception - the Licenses refer to
concurrent installs, not how many times you have installed the product in
the past.
As long as you only have the product installed on three machines at any one
time it doesn't matter what machines it is installed on.
The only thing you might have to do is to use telephone activation..
