I had microsoft word on my computer before I took it in
to CompUSA for some work (airport card installation). I
now have no microsoft word and CompUSA says they couldn't
have erased it. Any suggestions?

You are a bit of a bunny aren't you? No regular backups? Lost the
install CDs?

Wait till horse bolts. Lock stable door. If I'd sent a working machine
off anywhere to get 'fixed' without doing backups, I'd keep most mousy
quiet.

It is unfair to expect any repair effort to return your machine with
every file intact. You never know what might break and be quietly
replaced when they have its guts laid out on the operating table.

It's completely fair to EXPECT everything to come back intact, but also
unrealistic. Especially dealing with CompuUSA.

Because most consumers will cower before a Giant Corporation, who--not
being an actual person in spite of what the courts say--doesn't care
about whether or not people are actually _happy_ with what said
Corporation does, it's not likely to change soon.

There was a time when pride in workmanship and customer service meant
something. Long gone, sadly. Not profitable in the short term.

Well, I'm no expert but as a first step maybe you could try repairing permissions? That can fix some odd problems, although I doubt it would make the application completely invisible to you.

It does seem unlikely that somehow they went in and deleted one and only one thing in your Applications folder. Did they even have the password to your User account? Of course, they could have started up in OS 9 and avoided that altogether...

How about the Microsoft folder in your user preferences folder? Is that still there? Are you sure no other applications are missing?

This could be an indication of trouble with the drive, I suppose.

I see your point, but please note that he didn't whine about "what am I going to do now?" I interpreted his question as meaning "if they didn't delete the application, how come it's not there? What could make this disappear other than deliberate and malicious work on their part?"

Hi

It's quite possible that they didn't erase Word, but perhaps only deleted an
alias to it or its icon in the dock.

From your desktop use Apple+F and search for files that start with Word. It
might still be there.
