Lost MS Word 'Rights' during PC to PC migration

Helped a friend move old files from old PC using XP sp2 to new PC using XP
Pro.
Friend now reports that a window pops up saying that the trial version of
word has expired (they purchased the day they bought the new PC) and now all
the old files that they had are now in-accessable!
Can anyone help???

Thanks Jay...
He thought he had puchased it on day one. I checked the registry and
activated it for him.
