Lost Notes

A

Alan Fralick

I installed ON 2007 beta on 7/7 (ON note only, not rest of Office 2007) and
converted existing notes files to 2007 version and used ON 2007 without any
significant issues, for 12 days through 7/19. On 7/25 when I opened my
Notebook I didn't see any notes from last 2 weeks (since 7/7 when I
converted) and the bar was at the top of my pages again, saying the section
was read only and needed to be upgraded to ON 2007 to be edited).
Oddly it created a 2nd backup file in the Notebook directory - similar to
what it did when I originally converted the files. I tried opening numerous
sections and saw the same thing.
So I can open all my ON files created since I upgraded but they only show me
the converted notes from before 7/7 and none of the notes created natively in
ON 2007.
If I upgrade the section I can create new notes and continue to see them.
I really would like to get back all my missing notes from the period between
7/7 and 7/19 but of greater concern to me is having confidence this isn't
going to recur or if it does I can recover from it somehow, else I need to
drop back to ON 2003 so I don't risk further lost notes/effort dealing with
this problem.

Tell us more about your setup. Are you using the notes from any other
computer? When you look via Windows Explorer in your ON notebooks
folder, do you see any of the missing sections/notebooks?
Why did you even close your notebook? Why did you not just leave all
your notebooks open?
Did you work with the Work Offline setting set?

No notes from other computers.
I am not missing sections or notebooks, I am missing pages in a section AND
previously "upgraded" ON 2003 sections again show "This section was created
with a previous version of Onenote and cannot be editted. Click here to
upgrade."

What I see in Explorer is:
If I have NOT opened the section up since 7/19/2006, I see 2 files:
- [section name].one file dated 7/19/2006
- [section name] (Before v2 Upgrade).one.backup dated 7/7/2006
If I HAVE opened the section since 7/19/2006, I see 2 files:
- [section name].one file dated [date I last looked at it, i.e. 7/28/2006]
- [section name] (Before v2 Upgrade).one.backup dated 7/7/2006
If I HAVE opened the section since 7/19/2006 AND re-upgraded it, I see 3
files:
- [section name].one file dated [date I last looked at it, i.e. 7/28/2006]
- [section name] (Before v2 Upgrade).one.backup dated 7/7/2006
- [section name] (Before v2 Upgrade 2).one.backup dated 7/19/2006
Why did I close my Notebook??? Maybe you misunderstood me, let me be more
clear. I closed OneNote and shut down my computer (an IBM tablet PC) because
I do that when I am done for the day. I did NOT go to the ON menu and choose
'Close This Notebook', if maybe you thought that is what I did. When I came
back to work and turned on my PC, I opened ON 2007 and simply clicked on the
ON section, I did NOT have to go to File menu and "Open Notebook".

I have ON files stored on local hard drive so I do not have any Use Offline
functionality knowingly setup. In the Options dialogue, Synchronization
section, I do NOT have the "disable Windows offline caching..." setting
checked.

I can submit one or more of the problematic files to you if that would help.

Hi Alan,

I just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten about you.
Unfortunately, I really don't know what happened with your OneNote, so I
am trying to get the attention of someone at Microsoft to see if they
have any clue. As it is the weekend though, I don't expect any response
until Monday. Microsoft might be interested in your .one files, so if
you decide to do anything with them, it might be a good idea to make a
backup of them first.

I have never seen anything like that to be honest.

Did you look in your backup folder? File-->Open Backup (or Restore backup)
and see if you lost pages are in there.

I haven't seen anything like this for when you all of your notes are local
to your machine. Are you using Vista? I just have never seen missing notes
like that.

At least I am not the only one...

Alan, how big are your .one files altogether? If they are not that big,
zip them up and email them to me. Or attach them to a report on Connect.
