Lost Outlook 2002 Contacts in PDA Synch

Hi

While synching with an empty Palm Vx I lost all 900 of my Outlook contacts
Palm support was of no help. They basically said if they are not there, then they are gone - no kidding

What file type are contacts saved as?
If I find a backup of the contacts file on my PC, how do I restore it
