There are passwords to open files, to unlock worksheets, to unlock workbooks
and to unlock VBA projects. Which password did you loose ?

to open the file only

To my knowledge there are no free/cheap alternative for those, sorry.

If such a thing existed, wouldnt it defeat the whole point of having a
password on the file?

yeah you are right. It make sense.
But I do not know why people charge for this service. It means anybody has
money they can crack anybody's file by spending few bucks????
My file was not that important but I really spent about 12 days to compile
this assignment.
Let see if anybody has some other tips.

I believe you can recover the values in the worksheets but not the
formulas if that is any help to you.

Do not try to open the password protected workbook. First create a new
workbook and in cell A1 write a fully qualified path formula to A1 in
the password protected book. When you hit enter, it will ask for the
password but just hit OK. A1 in your new workbook should show the
value in the password protected book which is of couse not open. You
can then drag copy right and then drag copy down to recover the other
values.

Here is any example of a formula to a cell in a closed workbook

='C:\Documents and Settings\John\Desktop\[Book1.xls]Sheet1'!A1

nice try
I did enter the fomula as said and it aslso asked for password. I hit ok and
but I an error #REF!
I even draged it to nearly all the cell , it asked again for password I hit
OK and now I have #REF! in all cells.
I figured it won't work in this OfficeXP version

anyway thanks for the tip
