Lost Tray Icons after update of Office SR1a

The problem I am having refers to the start up tray icon
in the lower right side. Before I do an update to Office
2000 all icons appear. After updating and re-booting
over 50% of my icons don't appear. I have done
an "msconfig" and all icons are check so they will
appear. The only way to get the icons back is to do
a "System Restore" to the time previous to the updates.
I'm using Windows XP Pro. Any and all help would be
appreciated. Please e-mail a copy to me directly.

Thanks

Hi, Jan.

That area near the clock in the lower right corner is what many of us still
call the System Tray, or SysTray for short, but the official name is now the
Notification Area. Icons there can be managed in at least 3 ways: By the
program that produces the icon; by an overall setting to "Hide inactive
icons"; or by setting each specific icon to show or hide.

First, of course, configure each program to behave as you like, including
settings for how it should display its icons. Some such settings must be
done during Setup of the program; others can be changed whenever we like
from inside the program.

To reach those last two settings, right-click on the clock and choose
Customize Notifications... from the context menu. On the General tab, check
the box at the bottom to Hide inactive icons, or click the Customize button
to get to the next screen. Here, you can set each individual icon to Always
Show, Always Hide, or Hide when Inactive. (It takes a while for Windows to
decide that the program is, in fact, inactive, so it takes some patient
trial-and-error to get all the icons to behave as we expect.)

The System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) is not really meant for
managing icons. It controls whether a program (or service) will be launched
at Startup, but each program controls the behavior of its own icon - as
modified by your settings in Customize Notifications.

RC,

I tried all of the fixes you you refered to. This
morning I did a system restore to yesterday before the
2nd update and I was able to get all of the Systray icons
back that were there prior to the update. I also checked
the atatus of Office 2000. It showed that it was at
SP3. I also ran a Office 2000 update and it stated that
no updates were needed. I thought the issue was resolved
until I had to re-boot and i am back to the original
problem. Only a limited no. of icons appear and the no.
changes everytime I re-boot. Any help would be
appreciated or should I look into formating and
installing back to WIndows XP Home?

Hi, Jan.

I'm out of ideas, but others might be able to help if you mention which
specific icons you expect to see but don't.
