Lost Word 2004 document

A

Alan Green

I'm using 12" iBook, 256MB, Panther 10.3.5, Office 2004.

Prob 1: I had just completed 8 hours creating a 6 page survey
document with simple table formatting using 3 types of border lines
and two types of bullets. Only three cells were shaded. Same font
used throughout. During this process my right border would no longer
display on the page no matter what adjustments to margin or column
width that I would make. While attempting to solve this problem I
suddenly lost the entire document including content and formatting.
All that remains is a single para mark at the top left corner of a
blank page.

I reviewed immediate past actions but saw nothing there indicating
deletion or cutting. I tried pasting but only found the last small
sentence paste I had purposely performed earlier. I checked Trash and
found nothing under the filename. I was too upset to logically think
potential solutions through any more so elected to save the document
as it was and shut down the machine.

Today I was able to find the file using Norton Unerase and attemtpted
to recover. The size of the doc appears rather small (56KB).
Filename extension is .doc and info shows it to be approximately right
time of last creation. However, a preview of contents shows only
gobbldygook characters. Pressing Recover did not immediately open the
document in Word but provides a pop-up list offering conversion from
usual Text Only, RTF, etc. options. Conversion from any option only
provides gobbledygook. The doc has never been password protected.

I have searched the Symantec/Norton site but find no mention of
compatibility problems with Word 2004 formats. Can anyone offer
avenues for further exploration? I do have the "recovered" file saved
off to portable media for easy transport.

Prob 2: The longer I am using Word or Excel in a single session, the
slower my response time becomes; sometimes waiting as long 60 seconds
or more for the command to finish and document to refresh. I
typically have Finder, Mail, & Safari open continually but it doesn't
seem to change even when I close all other apps. How does Panther
manage RAM? Do I need to upgrade my RAM??

Thanks, in advance, for your advice.
