Lost XP Office Key

Like many others here, I have lost the disc & product key
for XP Office. I contacted Gateway and was told that they
have no way of knowing the number and that I needed to
purchase a new copy. Since the software was registered
(and already installed on my computer when it was
purchased) can I contact Microsoft for a replacement?
Although it's my fault the disc is misplaced, who's
responsibility is it to issue a replacement since the
machine is still under warranty? Thanks!!!

As the licence was OEM, then it's the responsibility of said OEM (in your
case, Gateway) to replace all lost discs/installation IDs. Microsoft do not,
and indeed, will not, offer any support for OEM installations. You'll have
to pursue it with Gateway, I'm afraid.
