I seem to have a continuing problem opening excel files I create on my
mac on any windows machine. I am using Excel V.X. If the file was
initially created on a PC it seems OK on both but any file I create on
my Mac will not open in windows.
I fet a message saying Excel.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by windows.
Any ideas out there?
1) Are you saving as a Excel Workbook rather than another format?
WinXL97/00/02/03 and MacXL98/01/v.X all have identical workbook
formats.
2) How are you transferring the file? I have clients whose email
servers munge my workbooks every time - if I Zip (or Stuff) the file
first, the client can uncompress and read the file without a hitch.
For one client whose IT department banned zipped files, I posted the
file to an FTP site, and sent her the URL so she could download it
directly.
It doesn't work the same when they send - I can almost always open
their files.
3) If you're using a floppy (admittedly unlikely if you're using OS
X, but some people do), make sure you copy the file to your hard
disk and open it from there. XL opens a lot of temporary files
(though Word does more, IIRC) that it puts in the same drive as the
file. If you use a floppy, that can fill up the disk quickly which
can lead to errors. Even if it doesn't, XL's save process saves a
new copy of the workbook to the disk, if that's successful, it
deletes the original, and if that's successful, it renames the new
file to the original name.
4) Have you applied the relevant service packs to both the Mac
(updates 10.1.2, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5) and PC (varies depending on your
PC XL version) applications?
