mac installed office suite no longer appears

i have a macpro laptop that came with office suite already installed
when i purchased this in march 2008.
word just quit and when called up appears as a blink and disappears.
excel has never been used and now does not open.i have a manuscript
that i am authoring. any ideas how i can recover the material.i have
never received notification of upgrades to the mac installed microsoft
software. at age 80, i am not computer savvy.

Check the log files to see why it's crashing. They should be in
~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter and /Library/Logs/CrashReporter. Or run
Word with the Console application running.

I suspect either your document or Word preferences are hosed. Pray it's
the latter.

My first thought is that you have inadvertently moved part of the
application.

Go into your "Applications" folder and look for "Microsoft Office" followed
by the year version of whichever version you purchased.

Open that folder and look for "Microsoft Word".

Double-click that. Word should start and present you with a blank document.

If it does, use File>Open from within Word to navigate to, and open, your
manuscript.

If Word does not start, come back and tell us that, and we will give you
in-depth fault-finding instructions.

I guess you mean that you have a "MacBook Pro" laptop? The Mac Pro is the
high-powered workstation ‹ different animal.

When you get back to us, we need to know which version of Office you have ‹
go to the "About" item on the Application menu in any of the applications
and give us the numbers there: it will tell you the Version, and the Latest
Installed Update: we need both numbers.
