Security Update 2007-005 causes Microsoft Office to fail

Has any body else seen the same effects as me - after the auto-update
of Mac OS Update 2007-005, none of my Microsoft Office 2004
applications can save or PDF any of my files.

Office simply crashes.

I'm trying to eliminate things - if other people are seeing the same
issue, then perhaps i'm not going mad

Hi Mike -

The Security Update is an Apple OS X release of course, but thanks for
making us aware of your experience with it - sorry it seems to be an
unfortunate one :( A brief tour of the Apple Discussions Forum indicates
that there may be a number of people - predominantly PPC users rather than
Intel - who are experiencing even worse repercussions than yourself. For
many the download/update hangs before completing, and some can't even get
their Macs restarted if it does fully install.

Did you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after applying the
Update? I would think that to be especially critical with security updates.

If that doesn't correct the problem you might try downloading the
appropriate updater from the link below, then repair permissions & see if
that works better... There seem to be a lot of issues with updates handled
by Software Update. NOTE: I'm only suggesting this because I haven't seen
any indication of a way to "uninstall" the update. The only other options I
know of are to recover from a backup if you have one or do an Archive &
Install to get back to a state prior to the update.

Mike :
You are not going mad.
I have spent the last day trying to solve the same problem.
I can not find a solution anywhere.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office to no avail.
All I can say is HELP!

Well, I am very mad. I updated my software to (2007-005) and now my
office crashes when i save).....

Atleast I have found others with the same problem!!!

On my MacBook 2GHz w/ 2GB ram I have Microsoft Office 2004

My headache started when I tried to SAVE in Microsoft Excel 2004.

I have a few other PowerPC applications that won't even start. I've
checked my crash logs and it just says that an "Unknown Thread" has
crashed. It is related to Rosetta. So this security update may have
done something to Rosetta or a related library. Also I noticed a
frightening comment in my console.log:

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
'/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/AppKit' has
inconsistently-compiled Objective-C code. Please recompile all code in
it.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The only thing that has changed for me is that I installed two
Security Updates this morning.

Installed "Security Update 2007-005 (Universal)" (1.1)
Installed "Security Update (QuickTime 7.1.6)" (1.0)

Good luck everyone. If i figure this out I will repost.

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!

Go to apple. Download the MAC OS X 10.4.9 Combined Update

The link is here---> "http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
macosx1049comboupdateintel.html"

Unpack it.

Close all of your applications.

Double click the PKG icon.

Click RESTART when it asks you to.

This fixed all of the Rosetta Crashes in my system. Microsoft Office
now works completely along with all of my other powerpc apps.
