MAC OS X upgrading Microsoft Office Suite

L

Lynne

I am running MAC OS 10.2.7 and am having trouble upgrading my
Microsoft Office from System 9 to system 10.
When I try to install upgraded Office I get error message saying,
The default location required for this install could not be found.
I do not know what that means. Someone advised to repair
permissions on the boot volume through DiskUtility.

I have no idea what to do. I am unable to find anything that refers
either to the boot volume or permissions.
Can anyone help please?
Much appreciated,

Could you describe what you exactly try? There is no
"upgrading" from Office:2001 to Office v.X. Office v.X has
to be purchased (but you'll have an "upgrade" rebate") see:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/officex/howtobuy/howt
obuy.aspx?pid=standard

Once Office v.X is installed there are 3 updates to be
installed (10.1.2, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5, in that order) to be
found here: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx
When I try to install upgraded Office I get error
message saying, The default location required for this
install could not be found. I do not know what that
means.

This message usually shows up when trying to apply an un
appropriate update: i.e. if you try applying 10.1.5 but
have not applied 10.1.4
Someone advised to repair permissions on the boot volume
through DiskUtility.

That's always a good thing to do: it should be done after
each install/update. And it is the first thing to try
whenever you encounter a problem in Mac OS X.

You'll find the Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities
folder. Launch it, select your boot volume on the left and
run the "Repair permissions". It'll take some 15 minutes,
don't worry.
