Mac/PC Conversion Question

Kate Flanagan

I am working as the only Mac user in a PC environment, and I constantly have
the problem of the PC users receiving files as ³read-only², whereby they
have to do a ³Save As² in order to save changes. I have looked at
preferences, security settings and protection, and nowhere is ³read-only²
designated.

Is there a solution here, where the PC users can make changes and save the
document directly, without having to save the document as something else?

Hello Kate,
That isn't normal, I share Mac-PC and no such message. Now I just need
to think where this can come from. We would need more information.
You said you share the files, how do you share them. DO you send thme
by email, are their stored on ntword drive?
If you open on your Mac such file which makes the problem for PC user
and navigate to File>properties>genral. IS there checked the read only
checkbox?
That would be all from me for the beginning.

Hi there, thank you for your response!

When I go to File/Properties/General, the "read-only" and "hidden" options
are grayed out... Why would this be?

Also, we have a shared network where we can all access public files. I
usually save the file to my desktop then drag a copy onto the server for
others to access. The error occurs both by e-mail and by saving to the
server.....

Hi Kate -

Re the email issue: Make sure the recipients are saving the attachment to
their local drive & opening from there. If they're just opening the
attachment they're trying to work with a file that's actually on the mail
server, to which they have no write priveleges. To "encourage" them to do so
use the Zip & Mail option... a better way to go, anyhow :)

The other issue is most likely related to network/server configuration,
which isn't one of my stronger suits :) However, I'm sure that one of those
more knowledgeable on the subject will most likely jump in before long 8>)

Kate,

You don't have the file open at the time your PC coworkers are trying to
open the file, do you?

I look forward to your reply.
