Mac to PC PPT 2003 -- Slide contents disappear

Often when I receive presentation via email that were
created in versions of PPT 2000 or lower--and most
recently MAC--the graphics and text on various slides
will completely disappear and the slide will revert back
to a "ready" state (insert text here).

What is causing this? More importantly, how can I avoid
or overcome this in the future?

From your subject line, I'd guess that you're using PPT 2003?

If so, choose Help, Check for Updates and get the critical update at the very
least; better yet, go for the full SP1.
