All versions of Word from Word 97/98 forward should be able to open files
from any version. There will be certain features that may not be supported
in all versions, and glitches can arise in individual documents, but
basically, you shouldn't have a problem. (I've done that frequently). If
you do have a problem, post back with details and version numbers.

DM: I'm having problems trying to open a Word XP document in Office X. Word.

It appears to be treating the width expressed in points in Word XP as inches
in Word X. The document spills off the sides, and is totally useless.

Is there a setting somewhere I can set to tell Word X to treat point widths
as points instead of inches?

Thanks,
James

In WinXL97/00/02/03 and MacXL98/01/v.X, column widths are set by the
default font's digit character width rather than pixels, points, or
inches (in almost all fonts, 0-9 have the same width so that columns of
numbers line up). So if the width is specified as 10, there's enough
room to put 10 numeric characters in the cell.

When you move to a different implementation with different character
widths (even if the fonts have the same name) you'll get what you're
describing. You can change the default font and size to that of the Win
users. IIRC, you'll have to quit and restart XL to see the change.

You might also take a look at scaling to fit on one page wide, and XL
will adjust the scaling automatically.

Honestly, I'm not even on X. :) But try this, quoting from Help:

Change the default unit of measure
You can set the default unit of measure (for example, inches or points) that
Microsoft Word uses for measurements you enter in dialog boxes and for the
Word rulers.
1. On the Application menu, click Preferences, and then click the General
tab.
2. In the Measurement units box, click the option you want.

Hope that helps,

OK, I'm going back to sleep now... I was working in XL and *answered* in
XLese. Sorry for the confusion...

Hi James:

The problem may appear to be that, but that's not what's happening. Word X
honours Word XP's point sizes perfectly, I know this because I work back and
forth between the two.

However, I am a little confused as to what you mean by "document spills off
the sides" so I am at a loss as to where to suggest looking first.

What's in that document? Which format is it in -- Word .doc or HTML? Which
Printer is it formatted for? Is the printer available from your Mac? Which
Template is attached to the document? Is the same template available from
your Mac? The same instance of the same template, or a different template
with the same name?

Enquiring minds want to know... :)

If you can describe the problem in sufficient detail so that I can recognise
it, I can help you. Warning: if you post a screenshot of what you are
seeing, the virus wall will automatically dump your post so I never see it,
so don't do that :) You can send a screen-shot directly to my email if you
wish: in which case, include the password BC6A61C2 as the first characters
of the Subject line, otherwise MY virus wall will dump the message too :)

Cheers
