Mac Word file crashes PC

Hi - I need advice. I have Office 2004 for Mac and Tiger 10.4.5. Of
late my word files have become unrelible on PC. At first it was a file
type problem, then I though it was a Norton AV conflict with email
attachments, but now I am I think something is corrupted. Today my word
doc crashed my client's Word program on PC. I tried to open it on my
own PC and had the same problem. Any ideas on where to start. Could
the normal template or my custom template be to blame?
Thank you.

Hi sgc,

Is this happening with documents created from Normal as well as from your
Custom template? It's hard to imagine that both templates could become
corrupt at the same time.

Can you give us more details? What is the nature of the document(s)
(simple/complex, long/short, etc.)? Do *all* documents create these
problems or only some? If the latter, do they have anything in common?

Have you tried testing your Normal template yet? See
<http://word.mvps.org/Mac/MacWordNormal.html>.

Have you tried uncorrupting any documents yet? See
<http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DocumentCorruption.html>.

This can be only one or the other of the templates. When you created the
document, which template did you base it on?

(If you don't know, it was Normal template)

So: re-name your Normal template. Word must be quit when you do.

Create a blank document, type some text, send it to both PCs and try it. If
it doesn't crash now, that was it.

Chances are, there's something wrong with your Numbering. That's what
usually crashes Word PC.

To fix it, "Maggie" your document. Carefully copy everything EXCEPT the
very last paragraph mark. Create a blank document, and Paste. That leaves
the corruption behind (provided you made sure you did not copy the last
paragraph mark).

Check the document: some of the formatting will have gone funny,
particularly the numbering.

The last paragraph mark stores all of the formatting information for the
entire document. If it gets corrupted, Word starts crashing. Maggying the
document replaces the corrupted formatting table with a new one.

Cheers

Thank you very much for your replies. I never determined why the file
was bad but finally figured it must have something to do with the
template or the tables, bullets etc. The custom template was based on
normal. So my work around was to create a new normal and then a new
special template by copying the text and styles I needed into a new
document. This was saved as the new special template. Interestingly I
had to rename the document. Word would recognize the name (as the one
that had to be recovered and think it was the old document. Once I
added a few more letters to the name (it was four letters), it worked
fine.

Thanks again.
