I am a graduate student and constantly have to upload word documents from my mac to a website (used by most universities) called blackboard. My professors that use PC's can usually not open the documents and are getting rather frustrated with me. I have tried saving the word documents in .doc and .docx format. Neither one will open consistently on their computers. What can I do?? THanks for your help. (have word for mac 2008 and am using snow leopard)

Hi Liz,

first of all, do you absolutely need to use the Word file format? If not,
use PDF; there is generally no problem with this file format, and
cross-platform problems are virtually non-existent. If you are required to
submit your work in Word file format, use .doc instead of .docx, as some
computers on the university network may not have the appropriate filters to
open the newer .docx file format. Other than that, I would also recommend
adding the file extension ".doc" (without the quotation marks) to the file
name, as it tells the computer which application to use to open the file. My
guess is that your professors should be able to open your files if they open
them via File>Open rather than double-clicking them, but the latter should
also work once you add the file extension to the file name.

Have you tried 'Save as RTF'? That's what I must use to submit word
document.s
