The file formats are identical, so there should be no problem opening
Office 2004 files using Office 2003.

How are you transferring the files? Mail servers occasionally munge
attachments - zipping the files before emailing usually cures this.

Also, MacOS creates two different files - make sure you're trying to
open the actual Office file, not the resource files (which typically
start with a ".")

In addition to John's comments there could also be a font compatability
issue.

The sender should also be sure they have their mail client set to send
"Windows Friendly" attachments.

It's hard to pinpoint because "not readable" doesn't really offer much to go
on:)

And to add to both John's and Bob's suggestions, be sure you append the
appropriate file extension to the end of the file names.

Word = .doc
Excel = .xls
PowerPoint = .ppt

Hope this helps!

To add to John, Bob and Bill's suggestions, make sure you are transferring
the DATA fork of the file :)

Mac files can appear in two halves: the Resource Fork and the Data Fork.

The information recognisable to Office applications is in the Data fork.
The resource fork is not useful to the PC, and it will refuse to read it.

Of course, a Unix File System file won't be readable on a PC either, and Mac
OS X will save to UFS, although I think you would know if that's what you
were doing.

Cheers

HI, I have a new iMac with Leopard. I will be using this at home in my job as freelance editor/writer but transferring files, mostly Word docs, every other day to my office computer, which is Mac based (word 10.1?) AND occasionally to my PC laptop, which has MS word 11.0 (2003). I am trying to get the right version of MS Office for this new computer, without having to worry about compatibility and bugs and the like. So, go for MS office 2004 for mac (i can find one; student edition) or 2008? The reviews I've read of 2008 make me a little hesitant. I'd like to write html text, however. what to do? NH.

Mac Word 2004 is most directly comparable to Win Word 2003, whereas 2008
more directly corresponds to 2007 on the PC. The scenario you describe
suggest you may be better off with 2004.

Of the versions (PC & Mac) you mention, however, neither functions as a real
HTML editor, so I'm not sure what you mean by your closing statement.
