Macro for insertng and numbering equations??

Does anyone know of an available macro to handle the inserting and numbering
of scientific equations?
I need to have the equation centered with a right justified number.

Any help on automating this would be appreciated.

MathType from Design Science (the company that supplie Equation Editor to
MS) can do this. See www.dessci.com.

Thanks but needs to be a free solution if possible as this is for a govt
project and there is no budget for additional software at this time.

FWIW, you can get a free trial of MathType from the Design Science Web site.
Even after the trial period expires, you have an "enhanced" version of
Equation Editor, and you can still edit equations created with MathType.
