Macro Security Hang when converting rtf document

M

Mark

This bug occurs using Word X and Word 2004.
First I have my secrity in both installations switched on (Macro virus
protection). This displays the Enable Macros form when documents with
macros are loaded.
I have a word document saved as a rtf document that has a macro
template attached.
When I open word (X or 2004) and from the project gallery open the rtf
word document with the macro template attached it opens and displays
the conversion dialog "Word is converting Document1.rtf...". A second
after this the Enable Macro form is displayed and then it hangs from
then on. From here I need to force a quit of word.
Is this a confirmed bug?
The only way we can get this to work is by disabling the security. As
this is commercial software we feel it is not a good idea to tell our
clients to disable security.

And in case your wondering... We do require the document to be stored
as rtf. We have a rtf converter that is run on it.

Does anyone know if there is a fix in the pipes or a work around? Or
is this a confirmed problem?

Thanks for any help...

Mark,

I am not able to repro your issue. I am following this scenario:
* Word menu, Preferences
* Security; check macro security warning, OK
* Create new template
* Add macro to template
* Save and close
* File, Project Gallery, My Templates
* Choose my template, Open
* Add text to document; File, Save As, RTF
* File, Close; File, Open

Progress bar for converter RTF file displays, no macro warning alert.

The Œthing¹ that¹s throwing me the most is the file being in RTF format. If
a document contains macros or custom toolbars, and is then saved in RTF
format, the macro and toolbar customizations are removed. The Œenable
macros¹ warning alert should only appear with documents that contain
customizations to toolbars or menus or contain macros.

What Œkind¹ of macros are in the attached template? Does the template
contain any custom File, Open macros? Are the files opened as documents and
then converted to RTF?

Hi Shawn,
It does sound like you repeated the process that I had layed out.
The rtf document itself does not contain any macros only the template
".dot" it is attached to. The template does capture the AutoOpen event
and does some processing of document fields so I wonder if this could
be doing something in there.
Our template does a whole lot of stuff so what I will do is try create
a simple template to issolate this error and will let you know how it
goes.
Thanks...

Hi Mark, the problem you are experiencing has to do with the fact that the
"Convert RTF" dialog appears in front of the Macro warning dialog. Usually
this conversion progress will appear in the bottom status bar of the
currently active window. Thus you would only encounter this problem if you
don't have any documents open or if you have turned off the "Status bar" in
the View preferences.

I have reproduced your issue under these circumstances and have logged a bug
in our database. For the meantime if the above information doesn't help
solve your issue, you can always use the following keyboard shortcuts to
activate the button of your choice in the Macro Warning dialog. While you
will not be able to click on the dialog with a mouse, it will still pay
attention to keyboard shortcuts:

<CMD>-E = Enable Macros
<CMD>-D = Disable Macros
<CMD>-N = Do not Open
<CMD>-T = Tell Me More

Thanks again for letting us know about the issue.
