Macro virus

A macro has appeared in Word 2000 called 'autoclose'. When I try and save a document it now needs several attempts to save, but documents are still saved as .doc. The delete button is greyed out so I can't delete this macro and none of the virus checkers I have tried find it. I have also tried using the organiser, but it doesn't show up. Can anyone help?

Try this:

1. Close out of Word
2. Open Windows Explorer and do a search for "normal.dot"
3. When found, rename it to "normal.old"
4. Close Explorer and re-open Word

Keep in mind that none of your other customizations will be retained. If
this is a problem due to other toolbars, etc, go back and rename the file to
"oldnormal.dot" and go into the Organizer and copy over the stuff you want.

Have you tried deleting the AutoClose macro? If it's not in Normal.dot, find
out what global template or add-in it's in and remove that add-in from
Word's Startup folder.

Thanks for this. I've done a search and found two 'normal.dot's, one in c:\msoffice\office and one in c:\msoffice\templates. Which one should go (or both)?

I've tried deleting it, but the button is greyed out on the macro tab. How do I find out what global template or add-in it is in?

I've actually renamed both, to no effect. The autoclose macro is still there. Any other ideas?

Sorry for jumping in, but maybe this will help. When Word starts it opens
the normal.dot global template and any other template file that is in the
Startup folder. To find the folder location, open Word, click "Tools",
"Options", click the "File Locations" TAB, click to highlight the bottom
listing (should be Startup Folder), then click the "Modify" button. Click
the "Look in" dropdown arrow and write down the entire path to that folder.
More than likely there is only one template file in that folder. Close out
Word, open Windows Explorer, browse to that folder and check out the files
in the folder. If you are unsure whether you can delete it, you can always
change the file name from "whatever.dot" to "whatever.old", reopen Word and
see if it is gone. My guess is there is only one file there and you DON'T
need it, but use caution and feel free to post back with what you find for
further direction.
