Macros help in generating XMLcode???

I was wondering if macros can be used in generating XML code.

I want macros to check (or scan or read, i m not sure if my technical
jargon is right) a document and produce xml tags. Is it possible? My
friend says its possible. If so, I would love if some expert guides me
through this.
