Anyone have any information on the following demo done onstage at Macworld
2005?
AppleScript in Microsoft Office
-Presented live on stage by Paul Berkowitz, Allen Watson (both MS
MVP¹s) on Thursday 230-315 PM
I spoke to Louise Ping, and Greg Amrofell, and they didn¹t have anything on
this presentation. I have the scripts and demo files for the other demos that
the MacBU did at Macworld 2005 in SF. Any help is great!
Allen has given you most of the information (such as it is). If you were
there, is there anything specific you'd like to be reminded of? As Allen
says, we just have notes. I'll check the PowerPoint references and URLs,
when I get onto my other computer, but I think Allen covered most of it. We
were presenting very basic information: there wasn't much time to go
further.
http://macscripter.net/scriptbuilders/
is the main source for scripts. There was also a reference to a place (on
Apple's website, no less, although there are no links to it there!) where
you can find some PowerPoint scripts:
http://www.apple.com/applescript/powerpoint/
Plus a reference to an "AppleScript for Absolute Beginners" tutorial for ,
yes, beginners, at
http://www.applescriptsourcebook.com .
Most of my section of the talk, and some of Allen's (namely, what different
script files look like and where to put them) will also be covered, but in a
little more detail, in that chapter of The Missing Manual for Office 2004 to
which Allen referred. (But not my "date demo" which I worked out just for
the talk.) And all the straight AppleScript stuff is covered in much greater
detail in the AppleScripts books to which Allen referred you, all of which
are at amazon.com and other places selling programming books. The Adam
Goldstein book would start you off well, well-presented for beginners, but
you'll need to know more to actually write scripts. The Hanaan Rosenthal
book has everything from beginner to advanced, but you need to work your way
through a massive amount of verbiage (888 pages) or know what to skip. The
Matt Neuburg book is the best, especially if you have done any other sort of
programming before, but starts out at a higher level than beginner. (None of
us has seen the Danny Goldman book yet, but we mostly learned AppleScript
from an earlier edition, when it was the only book in town.) None of them
has anything for Office apps, but you can find your way along. The most
critical references for Office scripting, once you know some AppleScript,
are at the new Resource Center on the MacTopia website, with very thorough
AppleScript References for Word, Excel and PowerPoint:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/resources/resources.aspx?pid=asforoffice
That will be your best resource. My chapter in Missing Manual for Office
2004 (not out just yet, but soon, I think) is just a very basic
introduction.
