Mail Error

H

HAL KUSHNER

I received an email message full of unusual symbols and diacritical
marks....probably an undecoded photo. Since then, I cannot send or receive
email on Entourage. I get an error message which says ³The action could not
be completed. Mail Error.² When I tried to access MS News Server to send a
help message, it said ³End of file was reached.² I¹ve tried rebooting,
disabling rules and disabling junk mail filter. I¹ve deleted that message
which I thought was the offending one (that was difficult and took lots of
tries).
Aside from Entourage, the computer seems to work OK...I can access the
internet.
I¹m using another computer to send this message. Any suggestions??
This is second request.

Thanks

I think the file is corrupted on the server. There is probably not much
you can do from Entourage if this is actually the case, you have to
delete the mail on the server itself. Try opening your account from a
webmail interface if you can and delete the mail from there.

Hi,

I think the file is corrupted on the server. There is probably not much
you can do from Entourage if this is actually the case, you have to
delete the mail on the server itself. Try opening your account from a
webmail interface if you can and delete the mail from there.

There is a way. First turn off Send & Receive All schedule. If it runs on
launch, and you're in Entourage 2004, hold down shift key at startup to
prevent the schedule running. If you're in Entourage X, go to
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Entourage Preferences and Entourage Settings
(10) and remove them, to prevent the schedule from running.

If this is a POP account, go to Tools/Accounts/Mail/[that
account]/Edit/Options, and check "Allow online access". That makes a server
icon for the account in your folder list left pane. Go there, and turn off
Preview Pane in View menu.

If this is an IMAP account, just go to the folder and turn off Preview Pane
in View menu.

Sort the folder by Received column. (View/Columns if it's not showing, then
click on the Received column header.) Now select the "bad" message. It will
be the oldest message not have downloaded yet -- i.e. the oldest message
with a partial, "jagged envelope icon" in the narrow Online Status column
(or extreme left if you're in 2004 3-column view), as opposed to the full
envelope icon. Press or click Delete. Now connect to the account (cmd-K).
that will delete the message. Then you can put things back to how you
usually have them.

Would that work for a POP account when the message has only be partially
downloaded ??

It should. "Online access" gives you access to the server, like an IMAP
account or web access. Deleting from there deletes form the server on next
connection and prevents the corrupt message from attempting to download and
causing the crash.

The one thing that gives me pause is Hal's statement that trying to reach
this _news server_ caused an "End of file" message. Connecting to the news
server should not be a problem. On the other hand, he's not crashing when
trying to launch Entourage, only when trying to connect to the internet.

Nevertheless, if simply deleting the message form the mail server does not
fix everything, it would usually indicate some corruption on disk has
occurred. So an Advanced Rebuild (just called "Rebuild" in 2004) is
recommended: hold down Option key at Launch and choose Advanced/Rebuild.

Thank you...I'm trying to rebuild the data base. I was able to delete the
message without effect. Entourage doesn't really "crash." That is, it
doesn't cease being an active window and have to be launched. It just is non
responsive....I can receive email (although, I couldn't yesterday), but I
cannot send an email. ...not because it doesn't connect to internet, but
when I click the "new message" icon, it gives me the error message: "Mail
error."
My first attempt at rebuilding the data base failed...it said "compacting
failed. Would you like to try an advanced rebuild?" I'm trying that now. If
that fails, can I just reinstall Entourage from my Office CD? I'm running
the Office X on Mac Panther. Should I get the upgrade to 2004? I'm happy
to if it will solve the problem. Office is a big part of my computer life.
Thanks for all your help. This is a life saver.

They're two different things. Reinstalling office will not fix a corrupt
database. It's totally to be expected that in a case like yours "Typical
Rebuild" will not do anything - it's not a thorough rebuild and doesn't fix
serious corruption. You need to do an Advanced Rebuild. (Only if the rebuild
doesn't complete, we should make sure that you have applied all the Office
updates to 10.1.4, since the rebuilder in 10.1.4 is more robust.) there are
occasionally different problems that require a "Remove Office" and
reinstall, and the fact that it now turns out that you _don't_ crash but
simply can't connect may indicate something that might require a proper
reinstallation. But since you actually did have a corrupt database, the
rebuild may fix it all. Let's wait and see.

The Advance Rebuild apparently fixed it. I can now send messages and
receive. My version of Entourage is 10.1.1 (Service Release 1)...How do I
upgrade to 10.1.4?
Thank you very much again. Your help is invaluable./Hal

Go to the MacTopia website Downloads
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx> and download and apply the
Microsoft Office 10.1.4 Update and 10.1.5 Update (in that order). You don't
need earlier ones if you have 10.1.1.

Thanks again..I did install 10.1.2, 10.1.4, and 10.1.5...apparently the
installations went well, but the About Entourage says it's Version 10.1.4.
I reinstalled 10.1.5, successfully, but get the same notification. Perhaps
a little bug..but Entourage seems to be running fine now thanks to you./Hal

It's not a bug. Entourage remains at 10.1.4, as does Word. Excel, PowerPoint
and various files (some of which may be used by Word and/or Entourage) are
updated to 10.1.5.

As Paul said, that's normal. You can see current version information
for Entourage X at
