mail filters and the system tray icon

This question has been asked and answered a hundred times. Why can't a
custom rule be created that marks incoming junk mail as read, deletes
it AND removes the system tray icon indicating new mail as necessary?
It's clear that Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2003 can't do this, for
reasons that have been stated, which amount to that's just how the
software works.

People have posted questions and complaints regarding this for 5
years. Clearly having the icon pop up for deleted junk mail is
terribly annoying. Think about it as a user--What good is a new-mail
icon if it pops up every 10 minutes just because you have deleted spam?
Is Microsoft taking this user feedback seriously? A software flaw
such as this would be serious enough to prevent a product from shipping
at many companies. I would like to hear Microsoft say that they have
received the feedback regarding this problem, and will address it in
the next release.

Because such a rule has no way of knowing if, following the message again
which it is acting, there is another, non-junk new message waiting to be
read. If you had a rule that turned off the new mail icon when it deleted a
message and there were more new messages in your Inbox, you'd be unhappy
about that because you wouldn't be notified of them with the icon.

Just give us an option "Run the new mail detection code AFTER the rules
have run, when inbound mail is detected" and we'll all go away happy.

I was getting in my weekly lather about this very issue, intending to ask
where I could request such an option when I stumbled on this sequence, and
my spirits dropped again.

One thing about working in the software industry, the dilbert humor
just never gets old. We can control a robotic lander on mars, but,
by-cracky, making that little envelop on your display disappear when
there's no unread mail in your inbox is really difficult.
