mail history lost?

I updated from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2003. My email history, both received
and sent was stored in the default outlook.pst folder that Outlook 2000 uses.
After installing and opening Outlook 2003, I cannot find any old messages.
Did Outlook 2003 start a new outlook.pst folder (overlaying the Outlook 2000
one)? Are the old messages gone forever? Are there any recovery
possibilities? Thanks for any help.
