Mail Identities (Thunderbird style)

There is this one feature in Thunderbird which I think is very practical:

- You can specify several identities for one account (Name/Email address).

- When replying to an incoming message, the From is set automatically to the
Identity the message was sent to (To:)

This is very useful if you got several email addresses that point to the
same mailbox (be them aliases or forwards)

When there is more than one account set up in Outlook, Outlook automatically
replies using the same email address that the original was sent to, so
what's your question?

I tried to test this on Outlook 12 TR and created a "dummy" email account
using pop3 and took it out from the send&receive group, so it won't disturb.

Result: it doesn't work like you say. Maybe it works with POP3 accounts, but
my real account is IMAP, so all mail that I got in my IMAP folders gets sent
from that account's address if i reply to them.
Of course I could manually change the "account" I send from manually each
time, but it's pretty annoying and risky if I forget to do so.

Also, I talked about the "identity" and not "account" feature of
Thunderbird... if you know Thunderbird you also understand my question.

I do, but I've never bothered with the "identities" function in TBird, I
just didn't see the point.....

Ok, so just to be clear, this is my situation:
I have like 20 email addresses, all pointing to the same IMAP mailbox,
simply because I don't want to set up 20 different IMAP mailboxes... that's
silly.

When i reply to a message sent to address A i want the From to be my address
A, if it was sent to address B i want to send the reply from address B and so
on...
This is what the identities are for in Thunderbird. Outlook does not have
such a feature. I would have to set up 20 dummy accounts and choose the
"From:" account manually each time when replying to a message...

You are correct. As Outlook is designed to be used in a corporate, exchange
environment, it was (and still is in any many organisations both large and
small) HIGHLY unusual for a user to have more then one email address. The
way outlook is designed, is that if you have two email addresses set up in
outlook (POP or Exchange) then the reply comes from the address to which
the mail was sent. If you have many email addresses being sent to one IMAP
mail box, than you're SOL AFAIK......you have only the option to change it
manually.

so it would be nice if microsoft would implement such a feature like tb's
identities in outlook 12 :)

But I can't see them doing so as I expect the demand would be VERY
small......

Make that Outlook 14 (MS is probably skipping the number 13).
Outlook 12 is still the same with Accounts.
