Mail Merge / Access vs Word

When using Word to create a mail merge for projects with several thousand
created/merged documents, Word takes too long.

When embedding a Word document in an Access report, and placing bound
text controls which overlay the Word doc, Access is many times faster.

My problem is when placing some Word documents, the Word document
is being modified (font size, footer missing etc).
This problem is happening with a Word doc that is a single page.

Are there any ideas for embedding a Word doc in the Access report
generator which will leave the Word document intact.

Perhaps crating a pdf, creating a bitmap of the Word doc etc.

Any ideas are welcome.
