Mail Merge Catalog from Excel to word

I am trying to create a catalog using Microsoft word and Microsoft Excel for
Mac 2008. Everytime i merge i get garbled text. If i try to edit the text
(on the excel sheet), - which means, cutting it and pasting it in word and
then clearing the formatting-, when i do a new merge, different text is
garbled. So sometimes some text is garbled and sometimes it isn't.

The text was cut and pasted from various sources. Is there any way to clear
the text formatting to plain text in excel?

Or if someone has another idea, please let me know. This is really
aggravating!

Without more detail, it's hard to evaluate what's going on.

What is actually in the cell(s) that are being garbled?

Why do you need to cut/paste Excel text in Word?

What then does the Word field display?

What is/are the Mergefield field code/s that get garbled?

Is there a pattern to the garbling? or is it random?
