Using Pub 2007 to create mailing labels for Christmas Card list. OK
Under tools>mailing & catalog> merge OK
Create recipient list > saved in My Data Sources. OK
Returns to Pub and continue merge OK, but notice some typos in list.
Back up in merge program and can edit by adding, sorting etc but not
correcting existing entries.
Save publication, try to Open (& edit) list.mdb
Tries to open in access BUT
"unrecognized database format"
also tried to open with excel also NG
Under advanced, noted
MS jet OLE DB provider (don't know what this means)
How can I open the mdb created during mail merge in publisher?

Have you re-booted since all this occurred?
This MSDN article could help with the jet issue.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175866.aspx

This article explains how to edit your list. You do not need to return to
the data base program.

Have you tried cancelling the merge? (Tools, Mailings and Catalogs, click
Cancel Merge.)

Sometimes it is easier to create a new publication (step 3 in the merge) do
the edits, then print. Setup the page with your label size, multiple pages
per sheet.

Thanks for help Mary, but I still have problem.
I started over doing labels and this time I said to use existing data base
and selected the *.mdb I created before and all went well, But - -
the database has some typos which I would like to fix.
I can't fix typos in publisher: I can edit but only to delete an entire
record. for example.
My problem is I can't open the db which I created in publisher and saved as
..mdb
I can't open the db in access or excel.
I get the error message " unrecognized database format"

New Info:
In fooling around, I went to the panel to print the merged publication -
and discovered the link "export recipient list to new file"
This seems to work OK.
I don't understand and I don't understand my choices of which records (all
or included)
Bill
