Mail Merge Data Compatibility

I'm compiling mailing lists on Word 2003 and giving them
to my secretary to merge and print. When she tries to
access the list, it comes up as gibberish. I've tried
saving the list in Excel, but it still doesn't work.
What is the solution here?

Is your Secretary using Word? If so, what version of Word
is your secretary running?
