MAIL MERGE DATABASE OR DIALOG ERROR

i am trying to set up a new list for mailings. i go into mail merge:
directory: use current document: type new list and when i hit the create
button i get this error: this operation cannot be completed because of a
dialog or database engine failure. Please try again later. How do I fix
this problem?
