mail merge date fields

I am running XP pro.
Regional setting English UK. Short date dd/mm/yyyy.
I have an Access 2002 database with a datetime field which
correctly show dd/mm/yyyy.
When I mailmerge it into Word 2002 the format changes to
m/d/yy.

It works correctly for office 2000 and earlier.

How do I retain the dd/mm/yyyy format.
