Mail merge & default programs

I use Vista Ultimate x.64 and Office Professional 2007 with Business Contact
Manager. I have battled a couple serious problems for several days now
without result. I think these issues are related?

When trying to mail merge in Word or Publisher and choosing Outlook
contacts, the program shuts down (Word or Publisher). Works fine if using
another contact list.

I tried troubleshooting Outlook and found an odd error I cannot resolve
either. Choosing "Options" >> "Other" tab >> "Default Programs" button, I
get an error message: "There was a problem loading the 'Set a Default
Program' page. (Error code 80070483)."

I then tried the Vista CP "Default Programs". Two items do not work
properly. Not surprisingly those two items are MS Office Outlook and Windows
Mail. Either one, when I try to "Choose Defaults for this Program" I get the
exact same error code listed above. And when the error is cleared I get a
partial screen of the expected one. Associations and Protocols are mostly
blocked out.

Help, please! I wish I could have posted screen clips of these errors as it
would have been far more desriptive.
