Mail Merge drops 1st digit ("0") converting from Excel to Word

I am running XP Professional - Office 2003 on a Dell Destop System

When converting an Excel file to a mail merge in Word the "zip code" column
(formatted as such), drops the first digit whenever that digit is a zero,
causing the zip code to now be invalid in the merge. (Side note: If the
first didgit is anything other other than a zero it tranfers... it is only
when the first digit is a zero that I have the difficulty.)

Is there a fix for this.

In your merge letter you need to add a formatting switch to the zip code
field, as Word is probably viewing the all numeric field as a numeric value.
The switch would look like this sans quotes:

\#00000

In Word click on help and type the following, sans quotes, to learn how to
apply merge format switches:

Try leading the entry of the Zip Code (that begins with "0") with an
apostrophe, i.e., '00210. This should tell Excel it's not a number and then
transfer it proper to Word in the merge.
