Mail Merge field coming across as a date

I have a text field that I am pulling from a SQL database
and the values in the fields appear to be dates however
they are not. IE 12/5/3, 11/4/2 - When this pulls thru to
word it automatically converts to 12/5/2003 or 11/4/2002.
I have tried several switches with no luck. I am using
SQL2000 small business server and office xp.

Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to replicate that problem here using
either Word 2000 or Word 2002 connecting either with OLEDB or ODBC, when the
field is either a CHAR (Char(10) as it happens) or VARCHAR (varchar(80) ).
Connecting via a view seems to be no different from connecting directly to
the table. My Windows regional options are set to use 4-digit years in
dates. Is there anything you can see on your system that differs from
anything I have mentioned above?
