Mail merge from excel and date formats

When completing a mail merge with data from Excel the
date fields cells which are empty appear in the merge
Word document as 12:00:00 AM and not blank. How can I
make the empty cells appear empty in the merged Word
doucment?

Which version of Word/Office are you using? Do you know
which method has been used to link in the Excel data?
